Network Marketing 101: The Jury's Still out on Decision Making...

I realised jury duty has taught me a lot about decision making and I have a greater understanding as to why people avoid making changes in their lives despite being so miserable with their current condition; they can’t make the decision to change.

When we got to the end of the trial we had a list of 8 counts we had to find the accused guilty or not guilty on. We had about 35 pages of evidence as well as our memories of the 2 witnesses being interviewed the day before. There wasn’t a lot of information which meant there wasn’t a lot of information to go through.

I sat down, worked through the logic of the situation, and determined how the law would apply and cam up with a logical formula which would help me answer all the questions. I looked at each question and applied my reasoning and came up with an answer. I did this in the first half an hour and 5 and half hours later still stuck by my original answers; there was no need to change them because my original system had found the answers for me.

Unfortunately some of the other jury members were overwhelmed by the responsibility of making a decision and buried themselves in unnecessary detail. Precious hours were wasted discussing “what if she did this…?” “What if she really meant that…” they were arguing over things that hadn’t even happened! I realised many people make the fatal mistake of thinking they can’t make any decisions until they have ALL the information. But what is all the information? How do you know when you have it all? How do you know how much information all covers and whether the information you have is relevant?

They were in fact mentally running around in circles trying to do anything but make a decision. How often does that happen in everyday life? You have to decide what house to buy and instead of narrowing down your choices to 3 houses you’d be happy to buy you keep looking at hundreds more houses and end up not buying any because you’re too confused. It’s not because you can’t find what you’re looking for; it’s because you can’t decide what you’re looking for.

I’ve always believed that you should make a decision promptly, act and move on. One of the hallmarks of a successful person is their ability to make decisions quickly (see Napoleon Hill's Secrets to Success). The sooner you make a decision that doesn't work the sooner you can fix it and the sooner you make a great decision the more time you have to reap the benefits.
